Epidurals

Epidural steroid injections are a common and well-established treatment for pain that radiates from the neck or back down the arms or legs.

Epidurals are nerve block injections that directly target the body’s pain receptors that carry pain signals to the brain.  By only blocking the nerves that carry pain signals to the brain, you will still have feeling and movement in the areas of the body that you received the injection.  An epidural steroid injection often does not require sedation and can be performed in the office with X-Ray guidance.

Some conditions that cause radiating pain and are treated by epidural steroid injections include:

  • Pinched nerves
  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal canal or neuroforaminal stenosis

The procedure only takes a few minutes and the benefits are numerous. Some of these benefits include:

  • Pain relief in the affected areas. The medication administered helps reduce inflammation around nerves and blocks pain receptors.
  • Confirming diagnosis. When epidural steroid injections work to block your pain, doctors are better able to determine the root cause of your problems.
