Dr. Buzzanell believes in treating the mind, body, and spirit as a whole. His philosophy revolves around the belief that controlling chronic pain requires a multidisciplinary approach. He likes to look at all the aspects of suffering to find a lasting solution.
His interest in relieving pain was stirred at a very early age. Watching his Irish grandmother serve the family elders in the last years of their lives piqued his passion and guided his career path. Known to his staff and patients as Dr. Buzz, he is a compassionate man who finds true joy in helping people. When you’re around Dr. Buzz, you can see it in his eyes; his compassion is palpable.
After graduating from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1984, Dr. Buzzanell completed his anesthesiology residency training at the National Naval Medical Center with fellowship training in pain management at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He holds board certifications in Pain Management and Anesthesiology through the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Before he became Dr. Buzz, he was Director of the Pain Control Clinic at the National Naval Medical Center and served in Desert Storm. He left the Navy after 12 years of honorable service in 1992. Following that, he became an assistant professor and Director of the Georgetown University Pain Management Fellowship Program. He also served as assistant professor with the New York Medical College at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City.
While training in Wake Forest, Dr. Buzzanell traveled west and fell in love with Asheville. He returned in 2004 to start Blue Ridge Pain Management. He now pursues his dedication to help patients with chronic pain regain function in their lives through pain reduction techniques, life coaching, and rehabilitation. During his off hours, Dr. Buzz enjoys hiking, biking, and photography.
Jacob (Jake) Flury, DO, is double board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine. He graduated with honors from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 2014. While in medical school, he was inducted into the National Gold Humanism Honor Society for excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion, and dedication to service. He completed his anesthesiology training in 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He went on to complete his fellowship training in pain medicine at Carolina’s Pain Institute and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in 2019, where he had the privilege to work with many of the leaders in the field of pain management.
Dr. Flury works with his patients to restore as much physical function and quality of life as possible. His goal is to diagnose and treat painful conditions utilizing up-to-date, multimodal treatments. He is well versed in medication management, minimally invasive interventional procedures, and alternative therapies. His down to earth attitude and gentle presence puts his patients at ease.
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Dr. Flury developed a deep love for the outdoors while living in the Pacific Northwest. He is happy to be in Western North Carolina, near his wife’s hometown of Brevard, where he and his family can enjoy the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. He spends much of his free time biking, camping, and paddling with his family.
Haley graduated from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center with a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. She completed her clinical training at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee where she developed a passion for oncology, palliative care, and pain management. Haley was an Emergency Medical Technician in Memphis, Tennessee before enrolling in her master’s degree program.
She graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. Biology Degree from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. During her undergraduate career, Haley conducted research at Vanderbilt University on the mosquito that is known to cause malaria. In her free time, Haley enjoys whitewater rafting, backcountry camping, and yoga. She is recently married and the happy owner of a four-year-old labradoodle.
Spencer graduated from Clemson University with a Master of Science specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. While at Clemson, she participated in a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic which further contributed to her passion for holistic care. After graduating, Spencer returned home to Western North Carolina where she worked in an Asheville area medical clinic for four years before joining the team at Blue Ridge Pain Management.
Spencer graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in nursing before moving to Greenville, SC. While working on undergraduate studies, she was the community outreach coordinator for the Student Nurses’ Association. Spencer worked as a registered nurse on a cardiac telemetry unit specializing in congestive heart failure for three years. In her free time, Spencer enjoys dancing, traveling with her husband, and spoiling her beagles.
